They are afraid of the truth or they don't understand it. It is hard and scary when you stand on the outside of something incredible and you are not a part of it.
Inertia. Doing the right thing always takes effort. It easier to do nothing and hope everything turns out.

Many times it seems that people are more afraid to give up worldly things even though they know the gospel is true. They love Mammon (worldly things/riches) more than God.
